Personal Retreat Needed

I think I need to arrange a retreat for myself--to take some much needed "time away" from the distractions of my life. What I would really like is to find a low-tech cabin or inn somewhere, and to go there without any of my technological distractions--no phone, no computer (the temptation of searching out wi-fi would be too great), no i-Pod. Just me, my books, perhaps a knitting project, pens, and notebooks, plus a draft of my current dissertation chapter in hard copy.

If I were to do this, the place would need to be quiet, secluded, and cheap, preferably cheap enough for me to stay there for 4-5 nights. I can't afford a lot, but I think I can afford something, particularly if it's bus- or train-able from home. Oh, and it would need to be available during my spring break, which starts March 23rd (or when I get my grades done, which could be earlier). Classes start up again on March 30th. So that's my time frame.

Suggestions? I'm all ears. I need me some serenity, man.

Cabin at Lake Quinault?

Hmmmm. I will have to look into that.

Oh, crap.

That's exactly the week I was talking to [livejournal.com profile] glaucon about staying with you kids; should I work something else out (it shouldn't be a problem at all)?

No, of course not--I'll either be here or I won't. Either way, I would love to have you as a houseguest. I'm looking forward to finally meeting you in person!

P.S. If I go anywhere, I'll only be gone for a few days.

I know of plenty of places like that... just none on that end of the country. T__T

Is there a national forest or park near you? I know here around the Smoky Mountain Nat'l Park you can find cheap cabins - not much in them but a bed and minor stuff, but they're isolated and the views are gorgeous.

There are tons of national forests and parks near Seattle. I'll have to look into the possibility of such a cabin.

There's a place between you and PDX called Wellspring, and from what I hear it's what you seek. It's in WA.

I'll get you more info as soon as I'm at a PC and not typing on my cell phone. :-)

Oh wait. Nevermind. Not cheap. Dang.

OOf, I guess not. Thanks anyway--maybe sometime when I'm a bit more flush. Or sometime between when the apocalypse hits and when the serious looters hit it. :-P

I found a cabin on a creek in Longmire that was pretty dang reasonable. Those vacation rentals are probably more reasonable during the week.

Perhaps vrbo.com can put you in touch with lodging providers once you find a region to visit. They have too many places that sleep parties of twelve, but you may just find a cottage for reasonable.

I could ask elsner if you could use his family's cabin in the rain forest.

you'd need a ride out there and back, but I'd be happy to take you.

it's kinda in the middle of nowhere, but there are neighboring cabins not too far away. there's a land line for emergencies, no cell or wireless coverage.

we can talk to him about it this weekend if you're interested in knowing more.

Yes, I am officially interested in knowing more.

If you want cheap and easy to get to and don't mind a little bit of civilization, you could look into some of the Amtrak stops in smaller towns like Centralia or Mount Vernon. Also, there are some hostels in out of the way places: http://www.hostelhandbook.com/usa/waother.htm
