searching for storage in all the wrong places

today's mission is to secure a storage area. i've called a couple of places, and decided to take a 5x10(x10h) space at public storage in capitol hill. it'll be $98.80/month. all of my worldly possessions are going there tomorrow, except for one box of books and whatever i decide to put into my luggage to take with me to cali next week. oh, and whatever stuff i need to live in my empty space for a week--air mattress, bedding, etc.

this feels really weird--scary and exciting, both. i'm kind of excited about the work i'll be doing, and also about living in a place i've never lived before, even if only temporarily. i'm sure i'll learn a thing or two.

i think the most painful part, so far, has been trying to pare my book choices down to a single, shippable box. lol--it's like i have all these ideas about what i'll be able to read or review in 10 weeks, but i *know* i probably won't crack half of them. so send me some ruthlessness, ok? cuz i'll feel dumb, if i have to ship back a box of books i never even looked at.

how many books did you read last time you were away?

If you limit your books to about 8 good ones you know you will use then that's all you've got and you'll suck the marrow out of them rather than dabble in 50 and not find anything you can use.

lol--yes, i'm sure you're right about that. i read/used a few of the ones i shipped to michigan last summer, not even a third of them. i've never been able to convince myself that 6 or 8 or even a dozen books are "enough" though. i guess it's no mystery why i ended up in a graduate program in literature... i think books are the *one* thing in this world that i am prone to hoarding or pack-ratting. everything else it's easy come, easy go, and i can be really ruthless about clutter and stuff i don't use or clothing i don't wear (i'm not ruthless 100% of the time, but i definitely *am* when moving). but not with books.

Do you recall the old school images of Hades? The ones where sinners are punished by some terrible thing vaguely connected to their life? My punishment would be having to cull my book collection down to a box.

And then having to carry all the others to an incinerator on the other side of the netherworld.

If for some reason, you have a box or two that won't fit in your storage space, you're more than welcome to store 'em at my place. Just let me know... good luck!
