a monday RWP

didn't do this thing on friday, so i'm going to do it now.

READING: blue mars by kim stanley robinson. i've read red mars and green mars, and started blue mars awhile back, and just...lost interest in it, about 70 pages in. i just picked it up again on saturday, and this time it's pulling me along ok. on the whole, i think this trilogy is brilliant. i love the complexity. in that respect, they rival the dune books, though i wouldn't put these two series into the same sci-fi genre at all. the mars books are neither as other-worldly nor as futuristic as the dune books.

WEARING: i'm thinking of dropping this part from the regular feature, because i have a very boring wardrobe. today i'm wearing jeans, as usual, and a blue boat-neck sweater. glasses. at the moment my feet are bare, toenails un-enameled.

PLANNING: going to see the bodies exhibition with a couple of colleagues. this is my second time viewing it. i'm writing about it in my dissertation, so i'm hoping to pick my colleagues' brains about what they notice while viewing the specimens. i have already formulated a somewhat broad global political critique, about the ways in which global capitalism and the world system have served as enabling conditions, allowing this exhibition to capitalize unclaimed bodies from china; a gender critique of the exhibit's arrangement and framing; and a cultural critique about how the exhibit itself contributes to the reproduction of the conditions necessary for biomedicine/biotechnology to continue developing as a major mode of production--namely, by nudging the exhibit's viewers in the direction of seeing themselves as objects of scientific research. anyway...later this week i'm going to duke university for a feminist theory workshop, which should be crazy interesting. i'm very excited about that! between now and when i leave, i'll be focusing on 3 things: 1. getting my syllabus and course packet completed for the class i'm teaching next quarter; 2. finishing up my prospectus revision, especially the chapter outlines and the preliminary bibliography; and 3. writing an abstract to submit to a conference i'd like to attend this summer--the paper i'll ultimately write will be the "seed" for one of my dissertation chapters (the one about the bodies exhibition, actually).
