i *finally* got out to the woods today, for the first time this summer. woo-hoo! i hiked around tiger mountain state park with a new friend who hasn't hiked much before, but wanted to try it. he enjoyed it very much, i'm happy to say. i enjoyed it too, both the hike and the company. he's cool. (hmm, she says, with slightly raised eyebrow...he's cute, too.)
the gentle terrain of tiger mountain has me itching to get out into the cascades for a longer, more challenging hike. i need to find some mode of transportation that will get me out into the mountains more often. (i don't currently own a car.) i can't keep relying on other people for a ride because i really like to hike and camp more often, and in more remote and difficult terrain, than most of my friends. so my options are: rent, hitch, or buy. renting (including flexcar) gets expensive. hitching rides with people i know is already not working. hitching rides with people i don't know? i guess i could join the mountaineers and go on their group hikes. the downside is that i'd be going on a bunch of group hikes. (with mountaineers.) thumbing rides is just stupid for a woman by herself (and yes, i consider that far more dangerous than hiking/camping alone, even though i know i shouldn't do that either). i don't want to own a car unless i move to a neighborhood (or a building) with better parking. motorcycle? great for summer, not so much for winter. i could store it (where?) all winter... the main problem with owning a vehicle of any kind is that i *only* need it to get out of town, and only very seldom to get around town.
what is the answer? i have to keep thinking about it.
or i could go down to rei and put myself on conspicuous display, woo me one of them mountain man types... (bleah. or not--lol.)
