Great. The gun nuts are adding to their arsenals because Obama is a "gun snatcher." This is exactly what the U.S. needs right now. Paranoid, reactionary wackos with larger collections of assault weapons and a brand new reason to use them.
Here's the NYT story about it.
I sure hope Obama's Secret Service detail know what they're doing. Seriously. I can't be the only person worrying that some of this hateful, paranoid rhetoric will boil over into an assassination attempt...? I know people have been talking about the possibility for awhile, but some of this shit is really scaring me.

It's officially a landslide. MSNBC is reporting "Breaking news" that Obama has won North Carolina (as reported by the AP). That would put him at 364 electoral votes.
Here's an article from the Seattle PI reporting the same thing. (Though, oddly, they say in this article that Missouri is still too close to call. I thought they called Missouri for McCain yesterday.)

ALL of the "most emailed photos" on my Yahoo main page are versions of two shots of John McCain following last night's debate. In all of them, his tongue is HANGING out of his mouth. Like...it is dragging against the bottom of his chin, it's so far out of his mouth. In one shot he apparently gaffed by walking in the wrong direction to leave the stage, and he looks like he's barfing his tongue onto the floor or something. In the other, he and Cindy are standing with Barack and Michelle, and he's just standing there posing for the photograph...like he should have a press-ready smile on his face, but no. Tongue: out.
WTF?
WTF?

i am speechless at the assassination of benazir bhutto. i don't know what to say because everything i might say sounds so trite, and ridiculous, too, coming from an american who is woefully ignorant of all but the most basic facts of pakistan's political history. so...i can't explain why, but her return to pakistan a few months ago made me feel some optimism, and i followed news of her rallies and exhortations to musharraf that he hold fair elections with no small amount of interest. her death--along with the deaths of the 20+ other people killed along with her, and the 140+ people killed during a previous assassination attempt last october--makes me sad and angry.
so much suffering... so much pain, fear, and strife in this world...

republican prez candidates declare national debt a threat to national security. the article quotes mccain: "Any nation that no longer has economic strength sooner or later will lose its military strength, so it's a national security issue."
oh, we might lose our military strength? bummer.
what cracks me up is that these wankers are all talking about how necessary it is to elect a president who will "rein in spending." what is the single biggest expenditure in the U.S. budget? next to social security, which...ahem, yeah, i'm not going to open that bag of pissed off cats just now...it's the DoD. don't take my word for it. don't take wiki's word for it either. please notice that the "global war on terror" budget is separate from the DoD budget--it's under "supplemental and emergency spending."
DooooD. what part of "end the iraq war, end the afghanistan war, and don't even think about invading iran!" don't you understand? it even makes logical sense from the republican standpoint.
the serpent continues to swallow its tail...
meanwhile, back at the ranch, the mortgage crisis widens the already gaping hole in the hull of the u.s. economy.

the WA state supreme court ruled that tim eyman's (2001) initiative 747 is unconstitutional because it misled voters.
hopefully that will happen with his latest one, which passed in tuesday's election, too.

wow. yesterday's election was kind of a disaster. especially the seattle city council races, almost across the board. i take heart in the fact that judy fenton, the insane lady whose main plank and call to action was "let's put fig leaves on the nude man/boy statues at the olympic sculpture park to protect our children!", was not elected. sherry carr isn't great, but she's better than that. as for the rest, though...wow, it's going to be a rough 4 years.
and how the FUCK did a tim eyman initiative pass? who stuffed the ballot box on that one? this is the last thing we need. now we'll never hear the end of it, and he'll never let up. the best thing you can do with insane people is to AVOID ENCOURAGING THEM!
i'm not exactly surprised that proposition 1 was voted down. i voted for it, but with reservations. it had big problems...but we really need to fund an extension of the light rail system. really. a lot. hopefully this part of the proposition will be revived next year.
finally, at least for my commentary right now, house joint resolution 4215: to allow investment of higher education permanent funds in the stock market. this has apparently been APPROVED? WTF? has everyone gone INSANE???
BAD VOTERS!
NO BISCUIT!

in which naomi wolf discusses how to close down an open society in 10 easy steps, and argues that the bush administration has already initiated all 10...
red flags, anyone? pick one up on your way into hiding.
p.s. not crazy about what she says in step 1, though... she essentially validates the bush administration's pet threat, from "global islamist terrorism," which is ridiculously reductionist and racist. does she really need to say this? no. i don't think so...it's cheap, formulaic, stereotypical rhetoric. the real threat is from the bush administration. focus on that.

ran a slightly extended version of my usual route today, so maybe 2.7 miles? that puts me at just over 5 on the week. my run this morning felt fantastic. oddly, because i almost decided not to run--and i got a late start--because i was at a friend's house until 11 last night watching the election results. i had to take a bus home, which entailed transferring to another bus downtown. the first bus was 5 minutes late, so i missed the second bus and had to wait an additional half hour. that means i got to bed late, not enough sleep, etc. etc. etc.
but the election was definitely worth watching. and i got to meet my friend's mom, who was visiting from the D.C. area.
i was almost universally happy with the election results. i wish darcy burner had won, but was otherwise happy with how the key races and initiatives turned out in washington.
now keep your fingers crossed for the virginia and montana senate races!
