wow. yesterday's election was kind of a disaster. especially the seattle city council races, almost across the board. i take heart in the fact that judy fenton, the insane lady whose main plank and call to action was "let's put fig leaves on the nude man/boy statues at the olympic sculpture park to protect our children!", was not elected. sherry carr isn't great, but she's better than that. as for the rest, though...wow, it's going to be a rough 4 years.

and how the FUCK did a tim eyman initiative pass? who stuffed the ballot box on that one? this is the last thing we need. now we'll never hear the end of it, and he'll never let up. the best thing you can do with insane people is to AVOID ENCOURAGING THEM!

i'm not exactly surprised that proposition 1 was voted down. i voted for it, but with reservations. it had big problems...but we really need to fund an extension of the light rail system. really. a lot. hopefully this part of the proposition will be revived next year.

finally, at least for my commentary right now, house joint resolution 4215: to allow investment of higher education permanent funds in the stock market. this has apparently been APPROVED? WTF? has everyone gone INSANE???

BAD VOTERS!
NO BISCUIT!

I hear you. The State's report on results is showing an astounding neck in neck: 52/47 on I 960, (which if it wins will be challenged as unconstitutional), 48/51 for sanity on the school district tax levies, and 56/43 on the Universities gambling with their money.

We're all mad here.

Tim Eyman isn't insane - he's an accomplished conman. If only progressives could be as effective. Now how can we kick democrats in the ass and get them to effectively sell a progressive state income tax?

As for prop 1 - what finally sold me on it was the pro-roads people whining about how 90 percent of the funds approved would go for light rail. Was it really worth it to shoot down light rail for another year or two to avoid spending 10% on roads? I don't think so.

4215 - Damn! We should have passed this in 1999 and put all of our education money in Kosmo.com. Here's an even better idea... buy a bunch of state lottery tickets with all the money - we'd be almost certain to win, plus ticket sales go to fund education anyway, so it's win-win!!! Speaking of gambling - I'll bet $20 that in less than 10 years, the stock market dips, a bunch of money is lost, and the asshole in charge that lined his own pockets gets indicted.

true. but when i think about it, my advice still holds: don't encourage him, or he'll never stop!

i'm with you on prop 1, for sure.

yesterday's election was kind of a disaster. especially the seattle city council races, almost across the board.

really?

Burgess was heavily endorsed and supported by a lot of real progressives, all of whom are entirely convinced that his legal work for some religious nuts in the past has been explained and/or repented. Della has been one of the most ineffective and inactive council members on record.

I'd say that one calls for cautiously optimistic celebration.

Velazquez and Harrell both struck me as kind of jerks, but they also both have pretty good progressive credentials. Harrell has kind of a fucked up personal life while Velazquez has a reputation for being a little paranoid and antagonistic (perhaps at the expense of her actual goals). I don't think I'd like to hang out with either one of them socially, but I think victory for either one would have been something of a win.

it's kind of a shame about Jean Godden, but I guess she hasn't fucked things up too badly during her previous term. sure, she's a corporate stooge, but she's not exactly a fascist either.

did you mean Sally Clark rather than Sherry Carr? one was up for city council, the other for school board. I think Sally Clark was the one running against the crazy statue lady. (trying to impose a statue of limitations)

that stock market thing is definitely highly fucked though.
we should probably private some social security too while we're at it.

yes, i did mean sally clark and not sherry carr. sheesh! thanks for the correction.

i really hadn't heard anything good about harrell. he was backed by developers...

burgess is an ex-cop, which is grounds for at least as much suspicion, in my book, as his work "advising" ultra christian chicks.

you forgot to say frack
