busy week ahead. grading and reading--some in english, some in german--and i have to write an abstract for the final paper in my marxism seminar. should be interesting. i have been planning to write about ellison's invisible man and its critique of the old left, but i'm starting to think maybe i'll write about one of judith merril's novels. she wrote some really weird pulp science fiction starting in the late-40's. cool stuff--lots of mutants and alien diseases and stuff--raises interesting questions about the impact of politics and pollution on women's household/reproductive labor, and troubles the boundary between the public (masculine) sphere and the domestic (female) sphere. my kind of shit.
stressful week behind. worrying about my parents. dad is having lots of trouble with cognitive function and short-term memory, which are possibly the long-term effects of a head injury he suffered just about a year ago. mom has osteoporosis, and one of her lumbar vertebrae is collapsing and putting painful pressure on her sciatic nerve. she has been on vicodin since october...now she's on a narcotic patch (presumably still vicodin, not sure). her docs were going to do a spinal fusion procedure, but now aren't sure they can. my siblings and i are starting to worry about m&d's ability to continue living independently in their house. such a touchy, touchy subject. how do you know when your parents' safety is threatened enough to warrant interfering with their independence and privacy? and what if one of them wants to move but the other one adamantly refuses? when do you intervene?
all this has driven me to start running again, again. 2 miles yesterday, planning 2 miles today, probably 2 more miles tomorrow. we'll see how my legs feel after today.
