mmmmm. having a nice, quiet night at home--saturday night, glad not to be going out. i've been going out a lot lately. last night i was feeling more social, and happy to be out--met up with my friend A and took in some free cultcha at meany auditorium (she got free tix). a tribute to billie holiday, sung by nnenna freelon, interlaced with modern dance. A and i agreed, over drinks afterward, that individual elements of the performance were great, but the whole (in A's words) "didn't gel." still, it was enjoyable, and it was fun talking with A before & after--she's cool! inspiring, even.

today i met up with my friend the_kender, who is here from ellensburg for the weekend. we walked around the market, looking around in various shops, and ate some lunch. just missed some busking by the moonpenny opera--but we chatted with greg for a few. then we went up to the u-district for bubble tea and this cool conversation game of his: each person draws a card from a regular deck. the person with the high card gets to ask any question they want, and the other person has to answer. it was fun, enlightening, thought-provoking, a discussion ranging from favorite songs to past lovers to the cliche'd must-ask questions like "kirk or picard" and "elvis, stones, or the beatles." (yes...you have to start reaching for questions about halfway through the deck.) i asked him a question stolen from A, too: you're 4 or 5 years old, sitting in front of a 64-pack of crayola crayons. which color crayon do you eat?

thinking about it afterward, it reminded me of when i was an undergrad at michigan state, hanging out in my friend rachel's dorm room up on north campus (landon hall, if you know the campus at all) with her roommate karen, karen's BF chris, and rex (who's now my ex-husband; far as i know, chris and karen are still married). a gang of five misfits, three of us members of the msu karate club--drinking tequila shots (chris *always* had tequila) and paging through the book of questions with some kind of music playing in the background, talking until all hours. hmmmm, happy memories. i remember one night walking with rex back to holmes hall, where both rex and i lived, during an ice storm. we were so in love then...wow. it hurts a little bit to remember that, to wonder if i'll ever feel anything like that again, and of course to remember mourning it, 10 years later (alas, 7 years too long). tinges the memories bittersweet; but it was amazing for a couple of years anyway, probably the most in love i've ever been. so anyway, that walk usually takes 25-30 minutes at a decent pace. it took us about an hour and a half that night. we stopped a lot to make out, and to slide on and gawk at the ice forming all around us, on the sidewalks, grass, and trees--and on *us*, as it turned out. by the time we got home, we were both covered with a thick glaze of ice. my hair was about shoulder length at that time, and it was like darth vader's helmet. rex wore his hair in a rough approximation of a flattop (probably still does--he's a creature of habit, if it works, keep doing it), and it was all spiked out with solid ice. our jeans and jackets, too--stiff with ice. we crunched around in the grass for a bit before going inside. then we shared a warm shower, and folded into each other for the night.

that's what i was thinking about when i got home tonight (all of that, today and back then), so i went out for a 5 mile run--i think it was between 8 and 8:30 when i left. it was cool to run in the dark. i haven't done that for awhile. it gives me this amazing feeling of speed, like i'm a hovercraft skimming over the sidewalks. i'm sure i actually run *slower* than i do in the daytime, but it feels so much faster.

*and* i got a deal on a pair of shoes today. seriously...a major deal. i have been looking at my sad sack pair of dansko shoes, which i have finally beaten into the ground after close to 4 years, and *dreading* the replacement cost. (a pair of dansko shoes goes for about $120--very steep, but i walk a *lot*, and like i said, i wore this pair for 4 years, so i think they're worth it.) while i was in the u-district i ducked into buffalo exchange, and there was a sweet pair of black dansko mary janes in my size, barely worn, for $30. yee-ha! bonus! now i don't have to choose between replacing those, and replacing my nearly 5-month old running shoes that should have been replaced about a month ago. (cool to think about that...i've run a lot of miles since i bought these shoes on june 1st!)

all in all: an excellent day.
