READING: just started geoff ryman's the child garden. so far it's interesting. set in london, future, much genetic meddling with humans and other species. one of the main characters seems to be a human/polar bear hybrid. the central character, milena, is a lesbian, which she explains as suffering from "bad grammar." oh, and another thing i'm hoping will be more developed as the book progresses: the Consensus. here's where milena explains the consensus:
Everyone was Read at ten years old, by the Party. It was part of their democratic rights. Because of advances in medicine, representative democracy had been replaced by something more direct. People were Read, and models were made of their personalities. These models joined the government, to be consulted. The government was called the Consensus. It was a product of late period socialism. Everyone was a part of the Consensus, except Milena.
the story is complex, so i'm not going to go into more detail--if i tried, i'd be typing all day, and i'm only on page 33!
WEARING: right now...jeans, stripey socks but no shoes (yet), black long-sleeved t-shirt, and a cream sweater (the one i made). what can i say? i'm a sweater girl.
PLANNING: nothing on the agenda for the weekend, actually. i'm going to a NYE party at my friend L's house, but otherwise my schedule is wide open. today i am going to work on a scarf i'm knitting for
glaucon's mom. it'll be a late christmas present, along with a hat that i've already completed. i was trying to finish them so i could send them with him to pennsylvania, but the scarf has taken extra time because i didn't like the first thing i tried. once i finish it, i'll give it a wash and send it once it's dry. i am going stir crazy at home today, so i think i'll take my knitting bag down into central fremont and knit at a coffee shop. i'll take my computer, too, and do some writing.
