I've had arguments with people on both sides of the divide. I was vegan for eleven years and I'm still strictly vegetarian as far as flesh is concerned. But I do think there are people out there whose genetic makeup probably makes small amounts of meat an important part of their diet. And I draw a line between the gratuitous cruelty of the feedlot and medical animal research that actually benefits human life to a significant degree. Hell, I wear leather shoes, because everything else is such total crap and is pretty much a petrochemical product.
Since I do think it may be appropriate for some people, I tend to encourage things like free-range meat (problematic though it is) and pampas beef. And if it's more expensive... well, it doesn't have to be part of every dinner.
