hey, check it out, here's what i am! it's good to finally know, i was beginning to wonder. and can someone please tell me WTF is up with the explosive proliferation of quizzes on the web of late, most of them purveyed through blogs?

you are a half seacreature this is a funky picture.....YAY
you are a half-seacreature, watch out for poachers

which half-breed are you???????

LOL. watch out for poachers??? what the hell is that supposed to mean? i know, i know, it's not *strictly* supposed to mean anything, it's supposed to be fun. well, it is, so i guess that's good. i must confess that i get more of a kick out of the longer quizzes, though. this one's very short.

so my first day of school went well. the first thing that went well was that i made it to class on time with all of the materials i needed, without having to scramble. "what made the difference," you ask? i decided not to rely on the copy machines in my department, 2 out of 4 of which (on average) have broken down on the first day of school *every* year i've been here, and the 2 that end up still working are usually attended by long lines of other TA's waiting to make copies for their classes too. instead, i shelled out 4 bucks to copy my syllabus at the ave. copy center (those guys are the shit!). it was well worth the money: quick, easy, and aggravation-free. class itself was ok--we basically went over the syllabus, and i gave them an overnight writing assignment. tomorrow we're going to start a close reading exercise with one of sherman alexie's poems ("how to write the great american indian novel"), so hopefully they'll find that interesting. this quarter i have 14 students, but only 13 showed up, and one of them was half an hour late, which was mildly annoying. they were extremely quiet, though all but 2 of them are first quarter, first year college students, so it's not too surprising. i got them to laugh once or twice, so hopefully they'll come out of their shells more as we all get to know each other. lol--maybe i should juggle for them. or gurgle.

p.s. LOL--i just changed my picture icon thingy to my little polar bear, and i just realized how much "sea creature" looks like the polar bear's favorite food: the seal. oh well...bye bye sea creature.

yes, it happens every now and then. i've never really felt the need to do anything about it, because it has never escalated into anything problematic. just to be clear: i consider that line absolute, and would never fool around with a student (or a teacher...as you and i have discussed concerning someone we both know...) the closest i've ever come to that was a couple of years ago. i was in my office conferencing with a student (male, cute) about his paper. he was the last student of the day, and after we were done talking about his paper we got off the subject into more general philosophical territory (strictly intellectual discussion--he's a really smart guy). anyway, i gradually became aware of a "vibe" from him, and uncomfortably aware of the fact that i found him really attractive too. i basically ended the conversation, and after that i never met with him alone in my office again. instead, i always met with him over at the atrium in the HUB--busy place, nice and noisy. so it wouldn't be obvious *why* i would only meet with him there, i opted to just hold all of my office hours and conference appointments there instead of in my office. i gave the plausible (because *true*) excuse that i couldn't stand sitting in my sub-basement cubbyhole of an office for hours and hours. anyway, that "vibe" thing never happened with that student again, so all ended well.
