I'm late to the party, but several people on my friendslist have reported that LJ is in trouble. I think it's not a bad idea to back up my LJ blog anyway, regardless of whether or not the company running LJ is about to go belly up.

I use a Mac. I do not want to save my blog as a PDF.

Help?

(I could probably also do this on my office computer, which is a PC...though downloading software might be tricksy and I'd need to save it to a CD or memory stick. How big is the file likely to be?)

easily doable with ljmigrate but I suspect you have to have the devtools installed (fairly easy to do).

do you have a little space on your hard drive so that you can install them?

Define "a little." Woof! Looks like I only have just over 7G available on my HD. Perhaps I should do a little housecleaning and optimizing...

I use the macs to, and third party app installation is not my idea of a hot Friday night (unless we throw in the words chocolate and lube.)
I plan to stick my fingers in m ears. Hopefully some white knight of a software company will keep it afloat.

reports of LJ's troubles seem to have been fairly exaggerated. the stuff I initially saw said something about laying off 25 out of 33 permanent staffers or something, but the actual story on cnet indicated it was more like 18 out of 33 and that it wasn't "all of the technical stuff" that the initial stuff I saw was asserting.

I *always* think that backing up any even remotely interesting personal data is highly advisable, but I don't think we need to worry about LJ disappearing in the dead of night any time soon.

I'm sure you're right--I'd be surprised if LJ simply disappeared anyway. The story just reminded me that it would be a good idea to back this thing up. I've been keeping it for several years now, and I would be sad to lose it.

So...how do I do that?

I've looked into the backup software a little bit. I'll fire up my windows box this weekend and we can both take care of our business.
