I don't follow BSG at all, but this is a really interesting reading of it. Like you, I don't like it when people's response to this kind of insight is "don't ruin it!" Like we're just supposed to "identify with" and "feel" the characters to "escape our world" or whatever. Ugh. You're so right that reading critically is ultimately more rewarding and useful.
