i was just wasting a few minutes today while eating lunch, surfing news outlets online, and the headline for this article intrigued me. i didn't expect it to stick in my head, but it really makes me think. as someone who strikes up conversations with random strangers all the time, and who sometimes gets in trouble for it (mainly from guys who think i'm coming on to them...when i'm not, i assure you! but also from people who just want to be left alone.), i have always wondered if i should try to tone that aspect of my personality down a little bit. but now...while i would never expect my little bit of small talk to make much of a difference in anyone's life, i *do* like the thought that talking to strangers might help to counteract the fragmentation and isolation of communities that seems like an inevitable consequence of modernity (and also, i would argue, the driving force behind the apparent epidemic of depression and anxiety disorders).
