my semi-regular (lately quite irregular) friday feature--yay!
READING: just started nicola griffith's always a couple of days ago. so far so good. it features her recurring character, aud torvingen. i'm also reading animal's people by indra sinha. that one stays on my nightstand because it's in hardcover--too big and heavy for bus reading. (lately i've been bus knitting instead of reading, anyway.) in my queue: some graphic fiction, including maus and maus ii by art spiegelman; and the buffy omnibus volume 1. i'll be reading the buffy season 8 comics too, just have to borrow them from
glaucon
WEARING: jeans. green long-sleeved tee. stripey socks and black dansko maryjanes. on top: my new black cardigan! i just finished knitting it the other day, sewed the buttons on wednesday night, and now i don't want to wear anything else. it turned out exactly like i wanted it to, with one small wobble: the buttonholes are stretching out a little bit; i might have to move the buttons over. we'll see. so far so good--the top button band is sagging a little bit, but the buttons are close enough together that they don't actually sag open.
PLANNING: tonight, going to the CI after conferencing with students all day. i'll be ready for a beer. tomorrow i'm going to a derby party, which should be fun. sunday i plan to stay close to home.
i'm going to have to fly to michigan for a week sometime soon--perhaps as soon as next week. the situation with my parents has reached the point where...they simply can't live alone in their house anymore, even with the elder care helpers coming in several times per week and my sisters checking in on them several times per week. so we are going to move them into assisted living, ASAP. the "when" depends on which of two assisted living facilities my mother picks today. my sisters and brother have been looking at places for awhile...we thought (hoped) we'd have a little bit more time, but my dad got injured a few days ago (it's not serious--he got a black eye; i don't want to go into the details right now, but the gist is that he really needs 24/7 supervision) and we realized that we just don't have any more time. anyway, my sibs have looked at a bunch of places and narrowed their preferences down to two. they're going to take my mom to look at them today. one of them has a suite available now, so if she picks that one we'll be moving them soon, possibly next week. the other one won't have space for a few weeks, so i would have a little bit more time to plan. please send me good energy...this shit is hard.
KNITTING: i'm working on 2 lace scarves and a pair of wrist warmer/fingerless mitts that use stranded colorwork. this is the first time i'm doing a stranded colorwork project--i've done samplers before, but never a wearable item. it's hard because the mitts are knit on 3mm needles--very small! i'm also going to start a green t-shirt with a lace panel in the yoke. it's not girly lace, more like mesh. it's for summer--the yarn is brown sheep's cotton fleece. as for the scarves: one of them is almost done. i'm using some hand-dyed fleece artist merino sock yarn for that, and it's a really pretty blue with variegations in shade. i'm only 4-5 inches into the other one, for which i'm using elsebeth lavold's silky wool in a black/dark charcoal color.
