Mental housekeeping...

I had a dentist appointment this morning--just for a cleaning and checkup. No cavities! I absolutely love getting my teeth cleaned. I don't necessarily love every moment of the process, because sometimes the hygienist hits a sensitive spot, and that feels...not exactly painful, but unpleasantly wrong. I do love the polisher, though, and I guess I'm extra weird because I like the gritty stuff that inevitably gets left behind on my teeth. I also love the feel of my teeth afterward--so smooth. The place I can really tell the difference is on the inside of my bottom front teeth. I have one crooked tooth there (left of center--my left, I mean). About 4 months after a cleaning, it starts to get rough on the inside edge of that tooth, and by the time I go in for a cleaning I can really tell that it needs to be scraped. So after a cleaning, I can't keep my tongue away from that spot because it's so noticeably smoother than it was before.

I walked home from the dentist--which is up at 81st and Greenwood Ave. On the way home, I stopped at Mud Bay Granary to get some canned food for [livejournal.com profile] glaucon's cats. I'm like...that aunt that some people have. You know, the one who totally spoils her nieces and nephews. [livejournal.com profile] glaucon's cats are like my nieces, and I spoil them with canned cat food.

I also stopped at the Fiber Gallery, of course. Can't walk past that place without going in. I bought some buttons for the cardigan I just started working on--it's a summery, lacy cardigan that I'm making with a DK-weight wool/silk blend. I think it might have some nylon in it too, for strength, though it's not entirely clear to me--there was this weird snafu where the mill started adding nylon but neglected to inform the company who actually packages up and wholesales the yarn (it's Elsebeth Lavold's Silky Wool), so I'm not sure if my yarn was produced before the fiber content change, or during the lag time before the yarn company corrected the skein bands. Anyway, I'm adapting Pamela Wynne's February Lady Sweater, which is knit with worsted weight wool, to this lighter DK-weight yarn. I think it'll be really pretty. Hrrrrm. I also bought some blue Dalegarn Heilo sportweight yarn, to make a gansey. I don't know how else to describe the color...it's just blue to me, like, the platonic essence of blue; the exact shade you might find in the dictionary next to the definition of "blue." This yarn is spun from Norwegian wool, which I would also describe as the platonic essence of "wool." It's 4-ply yarn, smooth and very evenly spun but slightly itchy when held against the inner arm or neck; resilient, with that faint telltale lanolin scent (not too strong but definitely there). Anyway, I'm going to make Jess's Gansey with this yarn, except with 3/4 sleeves, and I might also change the way the armpit is constructed. (Traditional gansey/guernsey jumpers have gussets under the arms, but this pattern doesn't call for gussets--and I think it would benefit from them. If you look at the picture, can you see how the fabric is kind of bunching up by the model's armpit? A gusset should prevent that from happening...I think.)

So as I was walking home from the yarn store, I had to walk past the zoo, and as I was crossing two of the zoo exits along Greenwood Ave., in each case, the driver was simply not watching what they were doing, and didn't even register my presence until they were completely blocking the crosswalk. It was surreal to have the exact same scenario repeated like that. Fortunately I was kind of expecting it, so I stopped and waited to see what each driver would do rather than forging boldly ahead into the crosswalk and expecting the drivers to look, and to obey the traffic law that says "pedestrians have the right of way." Not so much. At one driveway, even the car behind the one that would have hit me if I hadn't been paying attention, exited the parking lot without letting me cross first. I don't know if they were just in a big hurry, or shellshocked from herding their children among the animal pens, or what. But clearly...they own the road, and the rest of the world simply must yield to them. (Self-important fuckwads...) However, I am having a lovely day, and I'm not about to let that spoil it.
