LOL--one of my students observed that i am not wearing black today. i was kinda puzzled, and i said, "oh, have i worn black all week or something?" she said yeah...and furthermore, she said that they all thought i was a goth. i literally laughed out loud, because today i'm wearing jeans and a blue cabled sweater, with a matching blue barrette in my hair. i said, "oh yeah? so what do i look like today?" she laughed. i'll tell you what i look like today: a preppie chick. and yes, that was intentional. (in my head i think i'm being sartorially sarcastic, but i'm probably the only one who thinks so.) but that's not what *she* said. *she* said i look like mr. rogers!!! OMFG! i said, "except i have a knife in my pocket. mr. rogers never carried a knife." then another kid said, "can you sing for us?" uh...no. sorry. i said, "you guys talk about me outside of class? and why do you care so much about my wardrobe??" then they proceeded to talk shit about my shoes. my shoes!!! the little shits. ;-)
me...a goth...that is too fucking funny. (no offense to my goth friends, of course, but would any of *you* ever call me a goth?)
i like this group. they are sarcastic and they keep me on my toes. (the above exchange was all in good fun...at least that was my impression at the time...i hope i'm right about that!) fortunately they also did a really nice job with the close reading exercise i had them do. i like it when my classroom can be both fun and rigorous. best case scenario, as far as i'm concerned.

Date: 2006-01-12 01:58 pm (UTC)It must feel weird that your students are taking notice of what you're wearing like we used to do when *we* were in school...i guess its all a part of teaching, you have to expect that since your out in front of the class most of the time people will have a certain impression about your appearance and personality even though it may not be what you are really like outside of the classroom.
