I'm transferring this meme from my friend L's blogspot blog. (I also have a blog there, but nobody reads that blog because, well, nobody writes in it either. Funny how that works.)
(Oh, and if you’re wondering why this post has capital letters in it, it’s because I actually wrote it in Word rather than the LJ text editor. Word forces the capitals on you.)
The instructions say to "Remove the blog in the top spot from the following list and bump everyone up one place. Then add your blog to the bottom slot."

4) Oh, Please (or superannuated 1L - I don't really know what to call myself)
5) whiteowl67 on livejournal, or arguchik on blogspot

What were you doing 10 years ago?
Let’s see…1996… I was living in Monkton, Vermont. I had been married to Rex for a year, and was deeply unhappy. I was still working for Haematologic Technologies, Inc.—a little company associated with the University of Vermont, that sold purified coagulation enzymes for use in research on the blood clotting cascade of reactions. I was a lab tech--I did both gross separations and column chromatographies, ran gels and did clotting assays and ELISA's, made buffers, shipped products, managed the inventory system, trained new employees--you name it. I was about ready to leave that job—with Rex’s encouragement—to stay home and try to be a writer. Little did I know, staying home was going to make me more miserable than ever…I was about to hit pretty much rock bottom…of a long-term depression that had begun, in its current form, in 1989 or 1990. I produced a lot of writing that year, but it was all a bunch of solipsistic navel-gazing, nothing I could craft into something publishable. But of course I needed to go through that. And it wouldn’t last too long before I would take a little adult ed writer’s workshop class through UVM’s Church Street Center program. The instructor for that class recommended that I take a “real” (i.e. for college credit) writer’s workshop that was being offered through UVM’s Continuing Ed program. That 2-week class (Summer of 97) literally (ha, pun intended) changed my life. One of the professors, David Huddle, took me under his wing a little bit, and said I should think about doing UVM’s MA program in English. So the following Fall—still 1997—I started taking undergrad English classes, which I continued the following semester. Then, in Fall of 1998 I started their MA program…and here I am. I can’t believe it has been 10 years. I’m still battling some of the same demons, but much better able to move myself in the world now.
What were you doing one year ago?
I was taking a Marxism seminar and a 400-level German literature class. I had just passed my exams, by the skin of my teeth (I think it took some off my ass, and definitely out of my heart, too). I was absolutely thrilled by the classes, but soooo busy that I couldn’t get any work done on my prospectus, so that had me chomping at the bit. I was in the second of the two “longish” post-divorce relationships that I’ve had so far, and starting to worry about my heart there, too. Not too long after that, my heart would take a third hit, when my mom got sick…I went to Michigan to take care of her after back surgery, and while I was there my siblings and I realized that our father was (is) actually in worse shape than our mother. Both facing end-of-life illnesses, basically. And still, no appreciable work done on my prospectus… It has been a hard year.
Five snacks you enjoy (As I attempt to answer this, I realize that in order to have snacks, one must eat something else as meals. So this is more like "Five things I eat that other people might consider to be snacks.")
1) Raw vegetables (yes, really)
2) Sesame sticks
3) Dark chocolate
4) French fries (Belgian frites are my latest favorite)
5) Cheese, bread, and wine
Five songs you know the words to:
Songs? I know entire albums, because I love to sing when I’m by myself…so here’s a small selection of songs I really like to sing….
1) Johnny Feel Good and Polyester Bride (Liz Phair’s Whitechocolatespaceegg album)
2) Here Comes Your Man (Pixies Doolittle)
3) Pretty much the entire Beatles White Album—hell, their entire catalog, really
4) Misguided Angel (Cowboy Junkies)
5) Love Has No Pride (Bonnie Raitt)
Five things you would do if you were a millionaire (Are we talking multi-millionaire, or just a flat million? If just $1M…) (That parenthetical was added by my friend L, and I’m keeping it because I’m starting from the same assumption. $1M…)
1) Pay off my student loan debt and pay for the rest of school. (copying L here—but it applies to me too)
2) Pay off all my other debt.
3) Buy a nice little house or condo.
4) Fly my nieces and nephews—and my brother and sisters—our for a visit, one at a time. I’d like to do the same with my parents, but I know they’d refuse.
5) TRAVEL THE WORLD!!!
Five Bad Habits
1) Reading ALL the news outlets online, from the two local Seattle papers to CNN and BBC to the NYTimes and WAPost.
2) Twirling my hair and slouching.
3) Falling out of my running routine too easily.
4) Flirting, apparently. If only I knew exactly what that is…
5) Procrastinating instead of working.
Five things you enjoy doing (Really?? Only five?? OK, I’m gonna cheat…)
1) Foot sports like running, hiking, skiing, skating, walking the city
2) Sex
3) Reading & watching movies
4) Traveling to new places via car, train, plane, or boat
5) Nice meals & playing cards with friends
Five things you would never wear again (So it’s “would,” not “will,” which is an important distinction… I’m assuming the usual exceptions for things like Hallowe’en costumes, etc.)
1) Birkenstocks. I’m copying L again—but yeah, me too; I used to have this awful pair of black Milano’s and yes, I wore them with socks. Add Tevas with socks to this item too. How about just sandals with socks.
2) Permed hair
3) Mork suspenders (yes, I had a pair in like 6th grade)
4) Any article of clothing with my high school’s name or mascot on it.
5) Any kind of Christian symbolism.
Five favorite toys
1) Text messaging (so expensive, though!!)
2) Juggling balls.
3) i-Pod and i-Tunes
4) My vibrator.
5) Knives and other sharp things
(Um…not necessarily in that order…)

Date: 2006-02-16 09:51 am (UTC)so we *do* still have some musical tastes in common. ;-)
still listen to triumph? i don't ever listen to vanhalen anymore, but i still like my old u2 stuff, yaz, pixies, etc. and i've been getting into some old punk and other junk from when we were kids too. it's cool. stuff i never even knew existed. (oddly, my 15 year old nephew andrew is into the same shit.)
but please...please tell me you haven't gotten into mainstream country. my 16 year old niece, audrey, loves it, and it makes me want to puke! hey, guess what else about her? she's the coxswain for one of the crew teams at EGR. she's the perfect cox--she's only 4'11", and she has a HUGE voice. (did you know that she and andrew go there?)

Date: 2006-02-21 09:21 am (UTC)I admit that *some* mainstream country is my guilty pleasure. I turned to it when I was SICK TO DEATH of the GR radio stations. Jesus ... GR is so behind the times. I hate that rap crap, and it was either that or listen to musick popular 30 years ago. WTH is that about?
LOVE LOVE margo timmins. Would dearly love to see them live!
