ok, so i bought a schmancy device to use for my period. it has an unfortunate name: the diva cup. it's basically a keeper, only made from silicone instead of gum rubber (i.e. latex). my decision was totally based on expedience. i was shopping at the PCC and they were selling the diva cup; as far as i know, the only way to obtain a keeper is by mail ordering it. i went for the instant gratification.
my "special woman time" started on saturday (term borrowed from
glaucon), and i really like wearing my new diva cup! it's super comfortable, and i literally don't feel it at all, unlike tampons or instead softcups (which pressed on my bladder/urethra and made it uncomfortable to pee).
BUT: the diva cup is hard as fuck-all to remove, which you have to do at least twice per day in order to empty it. i mean seriously. silicone + mucous membrane = Very Slick (VS). adding difficulty: the diva cup is held in place with suction (the keeper works this way too), which means that you have to grip the base of the cup tightly enough, and pull on it hard enough, to overcome that suction force. the package directions say that if you have difficulty removing the diva cup, you should squat and bear down as if you were pooping. then, of course, you have to stick your thumb and forefinger into your vagina to grab the device. which, as i mentioned earlier, is VS. supposedly squeezing the base of the cup will release the suction, but in my experience you have to squeeze higher up on the cup--and under conditions of non-arousal it's not so easy to get your thumb and forefinger up there far enough. granted, i've only had 2 days' worth of experience with the thing, but right now i can't even imagine how anyone could remove it without all of the aforementioned contortions.
now picture, if you will, a public restroom...
i keep using it because it's THAT comfortable. i keep thinking, "with experience, it has to get easier." it will, right?
