got my new glasses today. i was supposed to get them last week, but when they came in the first time there was apparently something wrong with the lenses, so they sent them back to be re-lensed. they came in again today, and i picked them up on my way home from work, yay! new costume, new costume! i already got gazed at and flirted with as i walked home from the glasses store. :-)

so the new specs are very cute, catty half-frames in a deep-ish red, not scarlet but not oxblood or burgundy either. my roommate, who is a visual artist and thus an expert authority on these things, called the color "dark cherry candy." they are dark enough that they won't clash with my non-red clothing, i think. the cool part is that the frames are actually two colors of plastic layered together. the outside layer is a translucent red, and the inside layer is a marble-y pearl. anyway, i like them! i can't post a pic yet because i don't have a digital camera, but i will soon. i'm definitely buying one before the michigan trip, which happens 10/24-10/31.

so i think my eyes are trying to fight the lenses. i have been wearing them for about 2 hours now, and my eyes feel weird and tired.

i am assured this is normal, and should go away within a week.

on a related note, does anyone have digital camera recommendations--both for the actual hunk of electronic gadgetry i should buy, and where i should or should not buy it? i'm thinking of just going to the UW bookstore because then i could use my UW bookstore charge card, and rack up some more patronage refund dough.

I have used several of the sony cameras and found them all to be quite good for the price.

I always liked Best Buy in Northgate for electronics but the UW bookstore patronage may make up for any price difference.

someone else mentioned sony cameras as being good, but with the caveat that they require you to use proprietary memory cards and batteries, both of which cost slightly more than the standardized and generic memory cards and batteries that fit other digital cameras. do you know if that's still true? (lol--i'm just being lazy...haven't really started researching this stuff for myself yet, other than picking up a price list from the UW bookstore).

I am using a cyber-shot DSC S600 and it uses regular AA batteries as does the one I use at work which is a different model of sony. The memory stick is proprietary as you mentioned, my thought is you just have to buy one with the camera and leave it in there forever. I guess if you had other devices that used other cards that would definatly steer ya towards a camera that used the same card. I didn't really see that as an issue. Also my laptop doesn't have a card reader so that didnt steer me a direction either.

i was thinking more about rechargeable batteries (which i would prefer to regular batteries). i guess my thoughts about the generic memory card would apply to a situation in which you're on a long trip and you fill up your memory card, but you don't have your computer there to download some or all of your stored images. so you're stuck having to look for a particular brand of memory card, which you may not be able to find as easily as the more widely used, generic one.

not sure how much of an issue this would be in real life...just something i'm wondering about. sounds like you haven't found it to be a problem.

I heart my canon Powershot SD 450. I had an earlier model and it survived Thailand, 3 Burningmans, and all manner of abuse while in my posession until a 4-foot drop onto concrete bashed in its little lens (I cried.)
That was a fantastic little camera, so I got the next model up and love love love it.
Can't wait to see a picture of you in your hottie glasses! Rowr!

i've heard very good things--from my brother and now from you--about canon's cameras. i was looking at their $300 model, which has very similar features (6 megapixels, rechargeable battery, 3X optical zoom...) as a nikon model that goes for $350. the only differences, as far as i can tell, are that the nikon has 21 MB of internal memory, and the lens doesn't protrude from the camera. i have no idea what difference this makes, since i would need to get a much larger memory card (probably 512 MB) for either camera. those go for about $30, so that would put me at $330 for the canon vs. $380 for the nikon (plus tax, of course, which is substantial in seattle).

oh yeah. i've known (um...yes i do mean in the biblical sense) at least 3 men who had a thing for the librarian look. not necessarily for actual librarians, but the bespectacled, beskirted, and buttoned-up (down?) look in general.
