haven't posted for awhile. last week i went to duke university for the feminist theory workshop. it was amazing--inspiring and challenging. i really liked the setup, overall: we met as a large group for keynote lectures, and in smaller groups for seminar discussions led by the various "senior scholars" who were present. (by "senior" i don't mean old, i mean established, which is to say much-published and widely-read.) each of the seminar leaders assigned 2-3 texts for us to read ahead of time. i attended elizabeth grosz's seminars, because i'm using her book volatile bodies in my dissertation. she was trained as a philosopher, but is currently working in a women's studies department at rutgers university.

i haven't run since last wednesday. thursday was too crazy. i was trying to finish my syllabus for this quarter, put together my course packet, and get ready to leave for duke. i took my running stuff with me to duke, but i didn't have time (or energy) to run while i was there. the short version of the story is that i didn't sleep at all thursday night (i was on a red-eye flight to get there), slept 10 hours friday night, and didn't sleep saturday night. sunday night i was up late taking care of last minute preparations for my class on monday, so i only slept about 4 hours. last night i finall got to sleep...went to bed at 9pm, slept all night (which is unusual for me lately), woke up at 6, and at 6:30 i finally gave up on trying to sleep a little longer.

the first day of school went pretty well, i think. i have a lot of upper division students in the class--only a few first-year students, and the rest sophomores, juniors, and seniors. about half of the class are juniors and seniors. that's kind of unusual for a composition class.

my only concern now is...i think i might be assigning too much reading for my students. in years past i have felt like i assigned too little reading, so maybe i got it right this time. we'll see how it goes.

meanwhile, i'm still not feeling fully rested this morning. i can't sleep any longer, both because i can't physically make myself go back to sleep, and because i have to get up and start my day soon. i'm thinking about trying to run this evening, but i may want to take another day off to catch up on my sleep. then i have to decide...do i want to run in the morning, which will mean getting out of bed at 6am on school days; or do i want to run in the evening, which could potentially make it more difficult for me to fall asleep at night?
