my sporadic friday feature is here again...
READING: archaeologies of the future: the desire called utopia and other science fictions by fredric jameson. the big white american marxist daddy himself takes on the much-maligned genre of SF. it's an interesting book and informs one thread that runs through my entire dissertation project: the utopian impulse, and particularly the eugenic form that impulse often takes, or the eugenic component it often contains. i have read several chapters of this book, and am re-reading those and reading further into it. i am also re-reading (for the 3rd or 4th time) michel foucault's essay, "nietzsche, genealogy, history" (collected in the foucault reader edited by paul rabinow). HA! also, in the minutes before bed that i devote to "fun" reading, i'm still slogging through dan simmons' olympos, the sequel to ilium. it's not that it's a bad book or anything--it's not great, but definitely engaging and interesting--it's just that i haven't been feeling like reading for fun all that often lately. instead, i've been devoting non-work time to knitting, running, and watching various DVD's. (i currently have THX-1138 out from netflix. i've had it for several days and haven't gotten around to watching it yet.)
WEARING: jeans, black socks, underwear but no bra, a black 3/4 sleeve t-shirt and a black boucle sweater with a big cowl neck. and my red glasses.
PLANNING: not a lot going on this weekend. thanksgiving prep. no firm plans for tonight; i imagine that will be a topic of discussion with
glaucon at some point, and perhaps also a friend or two. tomorrow we are going over to
malafrena and
rojonoir's place to hang out in the evening. i'll probably work at least part of the day. i'm also planning to run both saturday and sunday (today is a rest day, so i won't do anything more strenuous than walking; yesterday my legs felt really worn out after my run, so i think the rest is necessary). i have no idea what sunday will bring. thanksgiving shopping almost certainly (unless we do that tomorrow). we will have a big crew of "orphans" for the holiday--it should be a very good time.
ok, back at it...
