ganked from [livejournal.com profile] shellefly, because it looked interesting:

1) Where did you begin 2007?
at doug and erin's house, eating pudding in their bathtub with [livejournal.com profile] glaucon.

2) What was your status by Valentine's Day?
still coupled for a year and a month. also i turned 40 a few days before.

3) Were you in school anytime this year?
yes--teaching and learning. it's a hamster wheel at this point. :-D

4) How did you earn your money?
various ways. union organizing and teaching.

5) Did you have to go to the hospital?
yes--for a CT scan of my abdomen (to check for spread of my appendix tumor).

6) Did you have any encounters with the police?
nope, don't think so.

7) Where did you go on holiday?
wah! the only trip i took was to michigan to see my family. oh, and to friday harbor and portland a couple of times each. don't get me wrong, i enjoyed all of these trips and visits, but i really want to go overseas. i have been itching to do that since i was a teenager, and i've never had both money and opportunity together at the same time. perhaps 2008 will finally be my year. (i think i should just submit a paper proposal to an overseas conference--that would do it.)

8) What did you purchase that was over $1000?
my macbook.

9) Did you know anybody who got married?
nope, don't think so.

10) Did you know anybody who passed away?
no, not this year.

12) Did you move anywhere?
not this year. i've lived in my current abode since july 2006.

14) What concerts/shows did you go to?
HA! electric six. robyn hitchcock at least once. bumbershoot.

15) Are you registered to vote?
absofuckinglutely. i do it, too. every election. (i've probably missed 1 or 2 local elections since moving to seattle.)

16) Who did you want to win Big Brother?
i don't give a flying fuck about big brother.

17) Where do you live now?
seattle, WA (fremont neighborhood: the center of the universe, they say...)

18) Describe your birthday.
last year had about 8 people over to my friend L's house for dinner and a cake i baked myself. it was a lovely evening.

19) What's one thing you thought you'd never do but did in 2007 so far?
quit working for the union.

20) What have been your favorite moments?
oh jeez, i hate questions like this.

21) What's something you learned about yourself?
i, too, am susceptible to burnout, and when burned out will exhibit symptoms that are readily recognizable by trained professionals who know a lot more about what's happening inside of my head than i do. i also learned that i can trust these people (some of them, anyway); and that burnout is a serious condition that can (and often does) lead to more serious problems if left unaddressed. i also re-learned this valuable lesson: to listen to, and follow the advice of, my gut. always. if i can't hear it, i should go someplace quiet until i can. if someone else gives me advice that is diametrically opposed to what my gut tells me, i should tell that person to go fly a kite, and then i should do what my gut says. unapologetically. this is even more important than listening to the trained professionals, though this is also exactly the same thing the trained professionals (the ones who can be trusted, that is) keep telling me, so... i am hopeful that i will finally get this lesson down in 2008 and beyond. or maybe yet before the end of this year.

22.) Any new additions to your family?
not really. [livejournal.com profile] glaucon moved in, along with his cats abi and iphi. that has been really good.

23.) What was your best month?
i don't know, really. august? my niece visited and i took her to see the big volcanoes. the one that blew and that's blowing now, after a fashion, though not nearly as spectacularly as it did in 1980; and the one that will FUCK tacoma and olympia (along with several smaller towns) UP THE ASS if it ever blows. i always enjoy going to see the volcanoes. i love love love volcanoes. i still want to go up and see mount baker, and also down to see mount hood up close, and crater lake too.

24.) What music will you remember 2007 by?
harvey danger. david bowie--especially "starman" but also the rest of the ziggy stardust album. T. rex. nouveau vague's lounge-y covers of punk and rock songs, including "too drunk to fuck" and "just can't get enough." pixies, as usual.

25) Who has been your best drinking buddy?
buncha people. good friends, all.

26) Made new friends?
yes, i'm delighted to say that i have. my upward bound colleagues last summer (though i haven't seen them much...at all...since then; but i know i will), and also [livejournal.com profile] rojonoir and [livejournal.com profile] malafrena, new BSG, SF geek friends. yay!

27) Best new friend?
this is an impossible question to answer. they're all good.

28) Favorite Night out?
this is also an impossible question to answer but for a different reason. "going out" and i have had a complicated relationship this year. yeah, i'm being vague. i don't feel like baring my soul that much right now. i may soon...sometimes i do.

i love love love volcanoes.

Ever been to Ape Cave? (http://vulcan.wr.usgs.gov/Volcanoes/MSH/ApeCave/description_ape_cave.html)
A long lava tube near Mount St. Helens. You can hike for a few miles through it, reasonably smooth floor, lots of headroom, but *damn* dark when you turn out your lights.

no, i've never been. i've heard about it, but haven't managed to get down that way. whenever i've visited st. helen's, it has always been to either the johnston ridge side or the windy ridge side, or both. that is a very long drive, going from johnston ridge to windy ridge! my niece and i did that--she got such a huge kick out of the volcanoes that it was really fun driving around and showing her more and more stuff. i love going to the windy ridge side because you get to drive through all the knocked down trees--it's best in early spring, though, before the other greenery shoots up.

chris would probably like ape cave. he describes himself as "claustrophilic." i, however, am mildly claustrophobic, so it might freak me out a little bit. that wouldn't stop me from checking it out if i got the chance, though!

"claustrophilic" - heh. :)

The freaky bit is that on the lower part, you hike in 1 mile to a dead end and then head back. Other than that it's very roomy for a cave. Being mildy afraid of the dark, the spooky bit for me is shutting off the lights - cuz you know, maybe the switch will break and while you're fumbling with it, you might drop it, and it might roll under a rock, and then you'd have to spend a couple hours crawling out in pitch black, and maybe the sun would have set before you reach the opening and maybe you'd miss it and keep going up another mile and a half through the upper section.

Before the kids, we used to stop by every time we drove down to portland. There's also some cool aboveground stuff there, too, like remnants of a 500 year old lava flow through a forest - with holes where all the trees were. Someday we'll get back to making road trips, again.

LOL--i just love the ways in which nature issues periodic "smackdowns." i am in awe of the power that mountain unleashed in 1980, and i like to be in awe of things. i don't have religion and god...i guess in a way i have simply replaced god with volcanoes (and their ilk). :-)
