i am speechless at the assassination of benazir bhutto. i don't know what to say because everything i might say sounds so trite, and ridiculous, too, coming from an american who is woefully ignorant of all but the most basic facts of pakistan's political history. so...i can't explain why, but her return to pakistan a few months ago made me feel some optimism, and i followed news of her rallies and exhortations to musharraf that he hold fair elections with no small amount of interest. her death--along with the deaths of the 20+ other people killed along with her, and the 140+ people killed during a previous assassination attempt last october--makes me sad and angry.

so much suffering... so much pain, fear, and strife in this world...

There's a nice thing over on the BBC website that's worth reading, Benazir Bhutto in her own words, (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/south_asia/7162403.stm) which I hope would make you feel better. but its clarity and hopefulness could make you feel worse. ok, I'll shut up now.

the thing is, i don't really know much about her politics, or whether she was/would have been a better leader for pakistan than musharraf. it's not really about that. i just find it deeply disheartening when violence short-circuits discussion and debate.
