bought my ticket today--going to grand rapids to see my family at christmas. $400, up from $360 at the end of september (should have bought it then...). i don't want to go, and i definitely don't want to pay that much to go. why do i feel obligated to visit them, when none of them--except my brother--ever comes to visit me? when i'm the one who always has to call them if i want to know what's going on? don't they ever want to know what's going on with me?

i'll be gone for 8 days, dec. 20th-28th. well, at least i'll be back in seattle for new year's. i'll do my best to make the trip fun by visiting old friends...seeing some loud action movie with my nieces and nephews...

whine mode off :-/

Just because they're family...
for some reason, they get special dispensation.
But really, the money and the time will seem trivial one day...

it's a hard trip for many reasons, and i don't make it as often as i used to. i go when i can. but you're right, family is family, and i'm more likely to regret *not* going, than going. several years ago i made a conscious and mostly successful effort to let go of what i *wish* my family had been, and to just take them as they are. every now and then the frustration resurfaces...and i whine, then let go again. ;-)
