here are some rather small things i'm happy about:

1. my hair is getting longer. i've been resisting the urge to get a professional haircut, and have been trimming the hair at my nape with a razor blade comb. (it's a cool device i got at a salon supply store when i was in san diego.) my hair has grown out enough that it covers my ears again. i think i'm past the "autoharp" phase. ;-) oddly, though, i'm thinking of taking up a stringed instrument sometime soon, and the autoharp is as likely a suspect as any other. it would be fun to profane it. my inspiration would be that time i heard the yonder mountain string band cover ozzy osbourne's "crazy train." there's nothing like a randy rhoads guitar solo played on the mandolin.......

2. i really like the coffee beans i bought at the PCC the other day. they no longer sell the blend i used to like, so i'm happy to have found a tasty new (to me) blend. their stuff is all triple certified--organic, fair trade, shade grown--so that makes me happy as well.

3. i rearranged my bedroom a week or so ago, and i'm very happy with it. there's more floor space as you walk in the door, now, despite the fact that i have expanded my bookshelves and added a piece of furniture: a red locker thing from ikea. i call it "my credenza" or just "my cred" for short. (that was supposed to be funny.) i'm especially happy that my work space is now more separate from my sleep space; my desk and my bed used to be much closer to each other. now if i could only keep my desk clean, so it would be more usable...

4. i just started reading a book by shelley jackson that is groovy. it's called half life, and it's about a conjoined twin who wants to have her sister amputated. i also have a book of her short stories called the melancholy of anatomy (it's kind of a novel in stories, i think--or at least all of the stories seem more tightly interlinked than is usual, for a short story collection). i noticed her books while at the elliott bay bookstore; i was looking at kazuo ishiguro's new book when the title of jackson's novel caught my eye.

5. you know what else caught my eye? china mieville's picture on the cover of locus magazine, which was prominently displayed on an end cap. god he's hot. and smart. and a big pinko. you can see a thumbnail image of the magazine cover here.

What type are they? I've been wanting to try a different type of coffee.

Every once in a while I attempt to grow my hair out. I see some funky longer styles that I think I can pull off, so I just let it grow, and occasionally have it nudged towards something by my stylist.

But that whole "what do I do when it's sorta near my ears and the top won't do anything but arrrgh I can't cut it yet" phase is maddening, so I give up about 4 months into it and go back to my cracktastic 'do.

your hair is the bomb, jill-o!

all my life i have oscillated (vacillated?) between wearing my hair basically chin-length and bob-ish for a few years, then chopping it off boy short for a few months before growing it back out again. for about 2 years, when i was 30 or so, i wore it quite long, well past my shoulders but someplace shy of my elbows. when my marriage blew up at 32, within a month i had it cut (by the most marvelous gay aquarius hairstylist ever--and i describe him that way because he always described himself that way) into a rather dramatic, swingy chin-length bob. that was the start of my falling down drunk in short skirts phase. i'm much more dignified now. ;-)

i've been threatening to take up an instrument for awhile. i grew up in a house thick with music, and played the piano, so i really miss it. i love listening to recorded music, but it's not the same as fooling with it yourself, now, is it?

and thanx--from such a lovely as yourself, an especial compliment! :-)
