These pictures were going around the 'net like crazy late last year. 23 pounds is actually not all that outlandish; I met a Flemish Giant down at Rabbit Haven in Gig Harbor which weighs 19 pounds. Did you read the article associated with this pic? This rabbit is now being bred for food by the North Korean embassy. They're feeding fucking rice and potatoes the rabbits and who knows what kind of conditions they're living in... but don't get me started. Sorry if I kind of rained on your parade.
oh no, it's fine--i'm not one to get upset about learning an unpleasant truth behind an image. that's the kind of thing i seek. i didn't read the article, but i will.
i've just never personally encountered such a big rabbit, and i didn't know there were giant breeds.
i should have explained a bit more carefully: the unpleasant truth, itself, that lies behind an image might upset or outrage me, but learning about it never does. i'd always prefer to know than not, even when knowing takes the fun out of something. like finding out about santa, or recognizing your nerdy biology teacher behind the zombie mask at a haunted house. (although the latter might make biology class a little more interesting...) or, to cite more serious historical examples, finding out that nike shoes and gap jeans are manufactured by children working in sweatshop conditions; or that coca cola supports apartheid; or that the volkswagen was designed by hitler as a tool to promote german nationalism. even if these situations have been addressed and rectified, taken as a whole they make me suspicious of corporate culture, and they make me think critically about capitalist consumption.
Yeah, we've got a pic at the shelter of one of our alumni bunnies stealing a piece of fruit off of a kitchen counter.
I know that others view rabbits very differently than I do, and a lot of other cultures -- and even other subcultures here in the U.S. -- do view rabbits as things, as meat, not as creatures with feelings. And generally I just accept this; I am not going to change them any more than they could change me. I just feel bad for them, you know? The rabbits, I mean, not the people who breed and eat them.
Looks like we're writing at the same time. In case I didn't describe that rabbit picture well enough, our alum has his back feet on the ground and his front paws up on the counter -- BIG bunny.
Not really interested in going too deep into the politics of meat, just thought I'd point it out. :)

Date: 2007-02-13 07:42 pm (UTC)fruit is very motivational for bunnies, though...LOL.
the politics of meat is a very complex topic. i'd be very interested in hearing your thoughts about it sometime, if you're game.
