i should have explained a bit more carefully: the unpleasant truth, itself, that lies behind an image might upset or outrage me, but learning about it never does. i'd always prefer to know than not, even when knowing takes the fun out of something. like finding out about santa, or recognizing your nerdy biology teacher behind the zombie mask at a haunted house. (although the latter might make biology class a little more interesting...) or, to cite more serious historical examples, finding out that nike shoes and gap jeans are manufactured by children working in sweatshop conditions; or that coca cola supports apartheid; or that the volkswagen was designed by hitler as a tool to promote german nationalism. even if these situations have been addressed and rectified, taken as a whole they make me suspicious of corporate culture, and they make me think critically about capitalist consumption.
