people wonder why i love knives.
(love being the operative word.
love, instead of just use.)
because it's nice to keep something dangerous
in your pocket.
because life
is a knife
amazing super-ginsu
it slices
it dices
look what quick work it makes
of even my
tough heart.
kodak moment
catch you shutterless?
skip the camera
carve the scene into your skin
rub the wound
with honey
and salt.
(apologies to carl sandburg for stealing and abusing his metaphor...)

Is it the danger?
the utilitarian aspects?
Or is it the shock value?
What's a nice girl like you doing with an edge like that?

Date: 2005-08-01 09:51 pm (UTC)i also just think they're really beautiful and nice to look at, if well-made. i don't like the really ornate, flashy ones--i prefer them streamlined but really sharp, made with good steel. and they are useful, from quartering an apple to cutting rope to defending yourself if cornered. all of those uses add up to being able to take care of yourself, so they're symbolic of self sufficiency, self-containment, mobility, independence, etc. (i felt the same way back when i owned a pickup truck--i could fit all of my stuff into it and move myself from one place to another if i had to or just wanted to.)
