well...i have officially had my first surgery. they took out my appendix friday night, at the UW medical center.

and no, in case you're wondering, they didn't do the laproscopic procedure. i had an "open appendectomy." the surgical chief resident told me it's cheaper, faster, and only minimally more scarring; also that it's what *he* would have, if he needed an appendectomy. so i agreed. just get it done...ya know? i don't wanna die.

there's nothing like having your abdomen sliced open to let you know that you're alive.

and i still don't like narcotics. narcotics + sharon = bad bad bad like puking your guts out, running into walls bad. i'll take plain tylenol, thanx.

so what would you do with 150 oxycodone tablets, if you were me? hehehe.

wanna see my scar? ;-)

That appendicitis thing is a bugger eh'

We'll have to compare scars and storys when I visit. Remember to take it easy for quite awhile after the operation. I think I slept for a week after.

Glad your ok.

yeah, i'm not up for doing anything too active right now. i walked a block to a restaurant this morning, and was like...."ok, that's enough exercise for today." i find that i have a lot more energy, though, when i'm not taking the narcotics.

the pain isn't as bad as i thought it would be, though, as long as i don't move around too much, or in ways that require much from my abdominal muscles. the sucky thing is that the breathing tube from the surgery really fucked up my throat, and it hurts to cough, so my throat is perpetually froggy.

I admire your courage...I would have fainted at the thought of being "cut up"...

I can't believe Italy won!!! YAY!!

the thought of being cut up was far more palatable than the thought of *not* being cut up and letting my appendix fester until it finally burst, thereby (probably) killing me slowly with peritonitis. or quickly, i don't actually know how fast peritonitis kills the average person. i just know it is very difficult to treat and/or cure, and that it's often, if not *usually* fatal--which is why they don't mess around when you have appendicitis. but the final insult would be this: if i *had* gotten peritonitis, and they *had* been able to successfully treat it, they would still have had to go in and remove what was left of my appendix.

but yeah, italy won. everyone else in the room with me was routing for france, so i had to go for the italians. plus, the italian soccer players are way cuter than the french ones. i'm all about the cute. :-)

LMAO...yeah the Italians are hotties!! I think Cannervaro is the cutest ;) I hope he gets player of the tournament...as for Zidane I was shocked by the way he acted...it seemed very out of character...I wonder what the Italian player said to him to get him so angry...

hope you are feeling better...

That was truly the most awesome thing I've ever seen anyone French do. ^_^

hmm. i kinda liked the huge demonstrations that shut down the country...last fall, i believe.

i saw the head butt thing, though. i thought it was pretty funny, but yeah, it's hard to say what made him do that. it looked like their little conversation was pretty much over when he turned around and whammo!

lol. testosterone + adrenaline + rivalry dating back at least to WWI = sudden, inexplicable violence

i'm sure the papers will have something about it this week.

Just listened to the news this morning and Zidane says that Matterazzi called him a "dirty terrorist", which is why he got so pissed off...despite that FIFA have give Zidane the Man of the Tournament award for the World Cup.

Chicks dig scars.
open appy stinks. Keep your pain level down, you'll heal faster! Take care, appendicitis is no fun at all, and neither is surgery! I'm glad you're doing better.

pain levels are good, thanx. tylenol is doing great, and i'm forcing myself to take it easy. (not as easy as [personal profile] glaucon would like, though, i think...he keeps getting mad at me for overdoing the activity, and then he says, "you're definitely not a cry baby." i'm not sure if that last is a good thing or a bad thing... i guess i have a pretty high pain threshold, anyway, for whatever it's worth.)

my nurse practitioner called today and said *she* thinks they did an open "appy" (as you and they called it) because they were worried about it rupturing. she said my white count was pretty high, and had gone up significantly from when they did the labs at her office, to when they did them again at the hospital a few hours later. plus the CT scan looked pretty bad. (i wouldn't know...i kept asking the docs to show it to me, and nobody ever did.) hmm. guess i was pretty sick. it's still very strange and a little worrisome to me that i didn't *feel* sicker. i definitely did thursday night, but i felt better on friday. the NP said i'd have felt a lot sicker soon, and also would have been in excruciating pain, if i hadn't gotten it taken care of quickly.

hmm - sorry to hear about the appendix. Better sometimes to do it open, if its in danger of rupturing. That way, you can grab it a bit more gingerly. Ruptured stool in sterile abdominal cavity no good! Appendicitis actually classically doesn't make you feel totally crappy (unless it ruptures! Then you know in a hury!)

Those doctors, always hiding things from patients...

Glad to hear you're healing up. Any surgery is no fun, and the sore throat from getting a tube shoved down your throat is no fun either.
This too shall pass...

why do those doctors do that? hide things, i mean. do "they" (ahem, present company excepted) think "we" can't handle the truth?

i assure you, i can. the whole thing still makes me laugh... and i wasn't ever very scared. that was probably the endorphins, eh?
