ran 2.5 today (same as monday). kept it low and slow, working on the posture and stride stuff from the chi running book i wrote about awhile back. it's brrrr cold out today, overcast but dry. my favorite running weather, actually. anyway, that makes 5 for the week so far. planning to run another 5 (2 x 2.5) between now and saturday. next week i expect to run 5 x 2.5 unless something alarming and untoward happens.

p.s. i have decided to adopt the mongoose as my running mascot. isn't she cute? yeah, but don't be fooled. she's probably stalking a cobra that you didn't even know was there. :-)

Totally cute. Mongooses ... mongeese? ... always remind me of Riki-Tiki-Tavi.

dictionary.com says "mongooses" is the plural. the OED online says "mongooses" is the "usual modern plural form," but also lists the variants "mongeese," and even just "mongoose" (they also list "mongooze," of all things).

perhaps now is a good time to point out how much i love the programmer who made it possible to log in to UW restricted library resources with your UW netid rather than having to use that whole proxy server thing, which i never did get around to setting up on my computer. it's so much easier now!

I love that icon. Reminds me of a ferret I used to have.

What was the chi running book? I think I missed that. I took a class in HS (a gym class) called Zen Fitness that was about combing meditation and running. It was great--one of the best things I took in HS. I still think of that class every time I run.

the book is called ChiRunning and it's by Danny Dreyer. ISBN 074325144X. here it is on amazon (http://www.amazon.com/ChiRunning-Danny-Dreyer/dp/074325144X/sr=1-1/qid=1168468087/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/103-9764625-6483868?ie=UTF8&s=books).

p.s. yay for the weasel family! although...mongooses aren't actually in that family... (weasels are in the family mustelidae; mongooses are in the family herpestidae, presumably because they're snake-like or eat snakes. i'm such a dork.)

Yeah, I know, but they do look a lot alike!

I must've explained the mustelid thing about 100X when I had ferrets. Everybody thinks they're rodents for some reason. I read a book recently (a mediocre urban fantasy) where there was a semi-important plot point that revolved around ferrets supposedly being rodents. Great editing, huh?

The other thing people think is that they're in the same class as skunks...

you're sorta right...they're in the same class (mammalia) and order (carnivora) as skunks, but the family is, indeed, different! shows what i know--i always thought skunks were in the family mustelidae too, but i wiki'ed it and the family is, in fact, mephitidae.

Yeah, I knew that...I meant that *most* people think that, re: skunks and ferrets being in the same family. They used to be right, though. I think that either skunks were considered mustelids, but then were moved into mephitidae, or ferrets were mephitidae and then were moved into mustilidae. I only know they're different because I had sick ferrets and had to do a lot of research online.

p.s. ugh. the editing thing is infuriating, though i would want to give the old finger-shake to both the editor and the author...

ferrets don't even LOOK like rodents!!!!!

I know! Ferrets and skunks? Understandable. Ferrets being rodents? Not even close. Look at the freaking teeth!
